Explore THCB: The Future of Hemp-Derived Elevation

As interest in rare cannabinoids grows, one compound is quickly rising to the top: THCB. Short for tetrahydrocannabutol, THCB is a newly discovered hemp-derived cannabinoid that may deliver effects similar to, and potentially more intense than, traditional THC.

If you’re already a fan of Delta 8 or Delta 9, THCB might just be your next favorite cannabinoid. Known for its high potency and elevated binding affinity to CB1 receptors, THCB is reshaping what a hemp-derived experience can feel like.

In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about the THCB cannabinoid, from how it works and what it feels like, to how it’s made, how it compares to THC, and where to find it in Urb’s premium product lineup.

What Is THCB?

THCB—also known as tetrahydrocannabinol—is a phytocannabinoid, meaning that it’s a cannabinoid that’s produced by plants such as cannabis and hemp. Discovered in 2019 by a team of Italian scientists, it’s believed to be significantly more potent than Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC, though not as powerful as THCP, another relatively newly discovered cannabinoid that’s believed to be roughly 33 times more potent than Delta 9.

What Is THCB

Like many of today’s rare cannabinoids, THCB is most commonly produced through semi-synthesis using hemp-derived CBD as a starting point. The process alters the molecule to increase its binding affinity to CB1 receptors in our endocannabinoid system (ECS), which may result in more pronounced effects compared to Delta 8 or Delta 9 THC.

What’s the Difference Between THC and THCB?

Although the current research on the THCB cannabinoid is limited, some studies and anecdotal evidence suggest it behaves similarly to THC. Why? Whether found in nature or semi-synthesized, THC and THCB are closely related. Technically speaking, on the molecular level, Delta 9 THC has a pentyl side chain, while THCB has a butyl side chain.

Is THCB stronger than THC? The slight difference in chemical makeup may lead to stronger receptor interaction, meaning THCB could deliver more intensity per milligram than THC. While researchers aren’t yet certain as to exactly how much stronger it is compared with THC, its binding affinity to CB1 receptors in our endocannabinoid system is particularly pronounced.

Does THCB deliver the same effects as THC? Though cannabinoid experiences vary from person to person, depending on body chemistry, dose, and setting, the answer to that question is typically a resounding “Yes!” Many who’ve consumed THCB have stated that the cannabinoid inspires feelings of euphoria with an intense relaxation throughout, very similar to THC but potentially more pronounced.

THCB’s Potential Effects

Again, THCB is often described as being functionally similar to THC when it comes to effects, but slightly to significantly more intense. As with Delta 9 THC, THCB’s potential effects include deep relaxation, euphoria, and a longer-lasting experience. To get a clearer picture of THCB effects, let’s dig into the endocannabinoid system and why it’s been mentioned throughout this THCB breakdown.

Like all cannabinoids—and even some terpenes—THCB interfaces with our bodies through the endocannabinoid system. The ECS is one of our body’s most vital regulatory networks and contains a number of receptor cells, including those known as CB1 and CB2. The ECS helps control such functions as:

  • Memory

  • Immune function

  • Pain response

  • Sleep

…and more. Studies suggest that due to its slightly different chemical structure compared with THC, THCB has a higher binding affinity to CB1 receptors in particular. These are the ones most associated with imparting psychoactive effects. Meaning? Higher binding affinity = Stronger effects.

While consumer feedback is growing, more research is needed to confirm these effects scientifically. As always, start with a low dose and give your body time to respond.

What Are the Potential Benefits of THCB?

While research on THCB is still ongoing, early reports suggest the cannabinoid delivers an experience very much like that of THC, only more potent and possibly impactful. However, besides those intriguing sensory effects, there may also be some therapeutic benefits.

What Are the Potential Benefits of THCB?

Some preliminary rodent studies suggest the cannabinoid may help manage the body’s response to toxins and harmful chemicals. Others point out the cannabinoid’s potential to impart anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-fighting) effects. And like CBD, THCB may have a beneficial effect on neurological conditions, including epilepsy.

Are There Any Risks Associated with THCB?

As with all psychoactive compounds, there are risks associated with using THCB. While research on the cannabinoid hasn’t yet advanced enough to be called definitive, many clinicians believe the risks are similar to those with THC. These may include:

  • Dry mouth

  • Redness of the eyes

  • Increased heart rate

  • Impaired coordination

  • Memory problems

  • Anxiety or paranoia

  • Dizziness

  • Lethargy or drowsiness

Given the strength of cannabinoids like THCB, a mindful approach matters. We encourage first-timers and seasoned consumers alike to ease in—start with a low dose and take your time to feel it out.

How to Consume THCB

Like many cannabinoids, THCB is versatile, showing up in many of the same forms you’d expect to find more familiar cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD. Here are a few of the most popular formats:

Vapes and Carts

Since they dispense cannabinoids in the form of a potent but more cooling mist, vapes are a fun and user-friendly way to access the benefits of cannabinoids such as THCB.

Our Vape-cay Rome Liquid Badder Disposable harnesses the heightened potency of THCB in a portable, discreet, and easy-to-use format. All that’s required is the push of a button, and you’re ready for takeoff. Prefer the quick-change adaptability of a standard vape cart? Edibles

Thanks to its high potency, THCB makes a great addition to gummies and other edibles. Shelf-stable, discreet, and always delicious, many infused gummies and other edibles combine THCB with other select cannabinoids for a celebratory burst of potency.

Keep in mind: Edibles don’t take effect immediately, but once they do, the experience can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, sometimes longer. Give it time, and let the effects unfold naturally.

Is THCB Legal and Will It Show Up on a Drug Test?

At the federal level, yes. THCB is generally considered legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, which permits hemp-derived products containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Since THCB is a distinct cannabinoid and not Delta-9 THC, it typically falls within these guidelines.

However, legality isn’t uniform across the map. A number of states have implemented specific restrictions on hemp-derived cannabinoids, THCB included. These laws are subject to frequent changes and variations in their definitions of compliance, particularly with newer compounds that haven’t yet been incorporated into mainstream legislation.

At Urb, compliance isn’t just a box we check; it’s a core part of how we build trust. Every product is third-party tested and comes with a certificate of analysis. We also track evolving laws to ensure our offerings remain within legal boundaries. Still, we always recommend checking your local regulations before placing an order.

Will THCB Show Up on a Drug Test?

Some consumers worry that using THCB might trigger a positive result on a drug test. While, to date, no studies have been conducted to answer this specific question, based on several factors, it’s highly likely.

The molecular structures of THC and THCB are very similar, and they both produce the same types of metabolites—the by-products created by cannabis consumption—that can trigger a positive test result. Depending on the type of test performed, such as urine, blood, hair, or saliva, those metabolites are detectable during varying windows, some of which last weeks.

If you’re concerned about an upcoming drug test, our best advice is to forgo THCB, at least for a few weeks prior to a scheduled test.
